Peter Happel Christian’s début monograph, Half Wild, borrows its title from a passage in Our National Parks, written in 1909 by John Muir, who contemplated the public’s “growing interest in the care and preservation of forests and wild places in general, and in the half wild parks and gardens of towns.” Using this phrase as a way of thinking about both his surroundings and photography itself, Happel Christian constructed the work that comprises Half Wild over the course of several years at his home in the Midwest and in Muir’s home, Yosemite National Park.

In her accompanying essay, Liz Sales discusses the relationship between the wilderness and photographic abstraction, a potentially limitless territory.

Miranda Lichtenstein’s evolving eleven year project began when she inherited friend Roe Ethridge’s Linhof 4x5 camera with a polaroid back while on a residency in Giverny in 2002, and has continued across five distinct locations around the globe. Often shooting through a textured scrim or in graphic silhouette, Lichtenstein uses the polaroid plane to compose still-lives that slip effortlessly between representation and abstraction. “What’s more, a unique print of a painted object made sense to me conceptually,” she says. “I liked the contradiction of making an instantaneous image of something so labored.” Her mesmerizing layers accrue and dissipate while her surfaces simultaneously shift through her own sense of tradition. The New Yorker writes that “resisting the inflated scale of so much contemporary photography… Lichtenstein nods to the history of still-life photography, but she’s far too inventive to get bogged down in it.

We are super excited to announce an open call for writing submissions, to be considered for the forthcoming publication The Contemporary Photobook: New Perspectives in Publishing, edited by Larissa Leclair, and published in collaboration with the Indie Photobook Library.

This collection of essays will discuss the current state of the photobook in historical context, specifically focusing on the rise of independent and self-published imprints and their role in reshaping the publishing paradigm.

Moyra Davey began Copperheads, her images of Abraham Lincoln’s profile as engraved on US pennies, as an investigation into the psychology of money. This investigation is analogous to chrysopoeia; the camera acts of a type of philosopher’s stone, transmuting a base metal into something more meaningful and enduring.
